Well now you have to pretend it is July and
August. See, we are moving right along through the summer.
The weather was good with very little rain.
Guests came and went and had a great time. During this time, fishing was
excellent. While the walleye remained somewhat illusive, the bass were
especially prevalent. Fish were caught, kept, and eaten, as well as caught and
released.
Toward the first part of July, the fish, which
had moved to the various reefs, generally bit on minnows, spinners, and shadraps. The latter two baits seemed to work best when
they were trolled.
As the month moved on, they seemed to be
particularly partial to leeches and worms. But then as the summer progressed
into August and the temperatures cooled, their appetites changed and they liked
minnows and worms. As a note, while we have given information retrospectively
to tell you where the fish were and what they bit on, that doesn’t mean that
they will be in the same place next year.

The mosquitoes had subsided substantially, so
we could turn our attention to other creatures of the north. One of our
visitors was a lunar moth. We are sure you have all seen them as they have been
featured in various commercials, but, they really do exist in real life and are
actually quite attractive. They don’t seem to flip and flap as many moths do,
but instead they appeared to just float through the air.

The daises were in their glory, and just kept
blooming and blooming. It was fun to drive down the road and see clumps of
flowers all over the landscape. We also tried to put a little of nature inside
by placing some of the daises in each cabin.
One day Willy and AJ were taking fish remnants
to the wild life feeding station across the lake when they spotted and eagle
which didn’t appear to be acting naturally. When they saw it, it didn’t fly
away the way they normally do. It just sat there, first on the ground and then
in low nearby trees. The guys came back to the house, grabbed the camera, and
went back across the lake and got some great shots. The eagle continued to hang
around for the next several days, and then one day it was gone. No one seems to
know what happened to it. We hope this story had a happy ending.

Speaking of eagles, we have another proud
eagle to talk about. Last summer, after years and years of work with the Boy
Scouts, Willy, Mike’s son, earned his Eagle Scout award. We attended a ceremony
to honor his achievement. We are all very proud of him. Way to go Willy!
